Initial Impressions of the New D&D : Critical Hits

February 4, 2012 in RPG Blogs Abroad

“Two of the groups I had both went into the Caves of Chaos with very typical 4e empowerment. They had expectations about their capability and survivability. Both returned to the Keep bloodied, battered, and with a long shopping list of door-spikes, rope, poles, and crossbows. Both groups went out as 4e PCs the first time and old-school PCs the second. The entitlement they expected in the codified rules of 4e quickly transformed into the understanding that they would need to take hold of their own destiny. The world wouldn’t save them, they would have to save themselves, and the best weapons they had were their imaginations.”

Where D&D is Heading; or, How the Internet Changed a Game : Critical Hits

January 14, 2012 in RPG Blogs Abroad

One man’s perspective on the transition from AD&D to 4th Edition.

“What I will try to look at are what I see as the general trends rather than specific rules. (Some of these trends I have brought up in past articles in different contexts, so if I repeat myself much I apologize. Just consider it practice for when I will start embarrassing my family. More than I already do.) AD&D (sometimes called First Edition) was a mess of a rules set, in terms of mechanics of a game—and yet it was probably the most fun I’ve ever had gaming. I’m sure some of this is nostalgia, but not all of it is. I’m sure some of this is the newness of the game and the genre, but not all of it is. Looking back at that edition from the perspective of a designer and through the lens of countless RPGs, the game just excelled at getting to the stories. It might be because the game “borrowed” from so many great works of fiction that you couldn’t help be in a story as you played. Part of it had to be because there were so few choices that a character could make in terms of game elements that all of the decisions were made in the game.”

Playing D&D With Porn Stars: Anatomy Of A Good Houserule

December 19, 2011 in RPG Blogs Abroad

eff’s Carousing Mishaps table. It’s a classic. Tons of people use it. Jeff has many tables on his blog–why does this one work so well for so many people?

Let’s pull this bitch apart:

-It deals with something that’s already in the game but isn’t usually dramatized in the game. Your PCs don’t have to do some new thing or behave in a different way to use this table. It’s assumed that characters are always drinking and wenching when they’re not punching giant rats. It’s also usually assumed that the game is about when they’re punching giant rats and not about when they’re drinking and wenching.

Rumor: HBO to Order Two More Season of ‘A Game of Thrones’? « Suvudu – Science Fiction and Fantasy Books, Movies, Comics, and Games

November 29, 2011 in RPG Blogs Abroad

A Game of Thrones fan site winter-is-coming.net is reporting a rumor that HBO is going to order two more seasons of their hit TV show, A Game of Thrones. According to the story, cast and crew filming in Northern Ireland have already been told to expect another nine months of filming next year.

While I’ve not received any confirmation regarding this rumor, I don’t find it out of the realm of the possible. For one thing, the show is doing really, really well. I know people who haven’t read George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire or even read fantasy in general who won’t miss an episode of the program, and those who have read the series already know that the later books would require more than a season of episodes each for a faithful adaptation.

Hit 2004 Action RPG ‘The Bard’s Tale’ Heading to iOS | Touch Arcade

November 23, 2011 in RPG Blogs Abroad

The Bard’s Tale originally began as a trilogy of hardcore dungeon crawling RPGs released in the mid-80s for desktop computers and gaming consoles. In 2004, InXile Entertainment created a new The Bard’s Tale for Playstation 2, Xbox, and PC. This game was related to the original series in name only, and featured 3D action-adventure gameplay rather than first-person dungeon crawling.

Even though King of Dragon Pass [$9.99] is one of the nichiest (is that a word?) niche titles that has been released lately, I just can’t get enough of it. It’s been over two months since our review, and I’m still working towards ascending to the position of king. I love how different each play through is, too. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve needed to reboot my tribe, but each time I’ve taken a different approach and was met with a substantially different outcome.

Monsters and Manuals: What Astrology and Werewolf: The Apocalypse have to say about the human condition

November 17, 2011 in RPG Blogs Abroad

Human beings like organising themselves into groups and fooling themselves into thinking that the particular group they belong to is in some way distinct, having different (superior) characteristics to all the others. This is an element of in-group – out-group bias, a psychological phenomenon in human beings that seems one of our most fundamental social characteristics. We decide that we belong to a certain group, with its own special and brilliant flavour, and begin disparaging and agitating against all other groups with almost embarrassing ease.
